Natural fiber carpets (sisal, seagrass, hemp, jute, coir, paper) have to be treated extremely carefully due to their high absorbency. Exposure to humidity may result in mold growth and cause permanent damage to the carpet.

Regular vacuuming is important for the maintenance of your natural fiber carpet and helps keep it soil and dirt free. If a spot appears on its surface, it is crucial that you treat it immediately to avoid permanent stains. Try to remove as much of the substance as possible and absorb excess moisture from spills. You can apply absorbent “host” cleaner (soft, natural product that is environmentally friendly and contains all the necessary cleaning ingredients), leave it overnight then hoover it. If excess moisture is not dried properly, natural fiber carpets can shrink, distort and curl at the corners.

Because natural fiber carpets are extremely absorbent, it is very important that they are cleaned only by dry cleaning methods to avoid shrinkage and shape change. A dry powder or small powdered corn cobs mixed with cleaning solution can be applied to the carpet. With the use of a cylindrical brush the mixture is scrubbed into the carper where it interacts with the dirt and finally extracted together with the dirt via vacuuming. The advantage to having your carpet dry cleaned is that it can be used immediately after cleaning.
